TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Freshman Ashley Saverine's sixth double-double performance (13 kills, 13 digs) led four Salukis with double figure kills as Southern Illinois picked up a 3-1 win over Indiana State and kept its quest alive for a berth in the six-team Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Salukis (7-19, 3-11 MVC) beat the Sycamores 30-25, 30-28, 25-30, 30-26 on the road Friday and completed a season sweep of ISU.
"I'm finding out that when the chips are down, our kids know how to fight. It was a great team effort," said SIU head coach Sonya Locke. "That's one down and four more to go if we want to have a shot at the MVC Tournament."
Saverine had four blocks and her team-high 13 kills led SIU, but she received plenty of help. Marissa Washington had 12 kills and a team-high nine blocks and .417 hitting percentage (12 kills, 2 errors, 24 attempts). Her kill and block totals are just one short of her career-high 13 kills and 10 blocks in a match.
Carrie Shephard and Haley Hann each added 10 kills and four blocks, while Kelly Harman chipped in eight kills and 12 digs. Erica Miller added 13 digs and setters Holly Marita and Monica Laird conbined for 52 assists and 17 digs.
SIU had a strong night as a team, hitting .247 (61 kills, 21 errors, 162 attempts) with 16 blocks (8 solo). The .247 hitting percentage is the second best outing of the season for the Salukis. SIU held Indiana State to just four blocks and had 10 more digs (69 to 59).
The Sycamores were led by Kylee Osborne's 13 kills and 12 digs and 11 kills each by Sarah Smith, Brittanie Stowell and Kristin Widmar.
The Salukis face Illinois State at 7 p.m. in Normal on Saturday. The Redbirds are in sixth place and lead SIU by three games in the win column with four matches to play and could help their chances by beating Illinois State.
