NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State hit .333 as a team and swept Southern Illinois 30-18, 30-17, 30-22 on Saturday, eliminating the Salukis from the 2003 MVC Tournament with the win. The Redbirds served up ten aces and didn't allow one ace by the Salukis on their way to the 3-0 win. SIU (7-20, 3-12 MVC) trails sixth place Illinois State (14-13, 7-7 MVC) by four matches with just three left to play, ending SIU's hopes of a second straight MVC Tournament berth.
The Redbirds hit .333 as a team and and outblocked SIU nine to four, one night after the Salukis had 16 blocks against Indiana State. Illinois State was led by Laura Doornbos, who hit .370 (12 kills, 2 errors, 27 attempts), Staci Boyce's .500 outing (9 kills, 1 error, 16 attempts) and Ashley Grubb's .636 performance (8 kills, 1 error, 11 attempts). Setter Kelly Rikli added a double-double (34 assists, 11 digs) and scored on eight straight serves in game one to set the tone of the match.
Erin Strathdee led SIU with a career-high eight kills. Carrie Shephard and Ashley Saverine also added seven kills, while Kelly Harman chipped in six kills. Erica Miller led the defense with 10 digs.
The Salukis face Evansville on the road at 7 p.m. next Friday in their only match of the week.
