ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Southern Illinois University football team landed five players on the Gateway Conference's All-Newcomer team, the league announced Monday. SIU tied Western Kentucky for the most players on the 23-man squad.
C Elmer McDaniel was the only Saluki on the offensive team, while DT Linton Brown, DE James Field, S Frank Johnson and S Jamarquis Jordan all made the defensive unit.
McDaniel, a transfer from Northeast Oklahoma A&M college, anchored the offensive line at his center position. He was named the league's "Offensive Lineman of the Week" on Oct. 15 versus Illinois State when he graded out at 80 percent on blocking assignments. He was a first-team all-conference selection and helped pave the way for one of the nation's highest scoring offenses.
Brown started all 12 games at defensive tackle and ranked 11th on the team in tackles with 28. He had at least one tackle in every game and added 2.0 sacks for -11 yards. He also recorded 3.0 tackles for loss for -13 yards and forced one fumble.
Fields played in all 12 games and started two. He tied Billy Beard for the team lead in sacks with 5.0 for -45 yards. He was third on the team in tackles for loss with 9.5 for -56 yards and ranked 12th on the team in tackles with 20.
Johnson started all 12 games at safety and was an honorable mention all-conference selection last week. He finished third on the team in tackles with 79, just 12 behind team leader Alexis Moreland...Has 1.0 sack for -4 yards, 4.5 tackles for loss for -14 yards, two forced fumbles and six pass breakups.
Jordan started the first nine games before being sidelined by injury the last three. Nevertheless, he ranked fifth on the team in tackles with 63. He also picked up 2.0 sacks for -18 yards, 5.5 tackles for loss for -26 yards and two forced fumbles.
Northern Iowa RB Terrance Freeney was named the league's Newcomer of the Year honor, while Western Kentucky QB Justin Haddix picked up Freshman of the Year honors.
