Tuscaloosa, Ala. -
Sophomore Amy Harre's two-hit shutout led Southern Illinois University to a 7-0 win over Western Kentucky in game one of the Bama Bash on Friday.
"WKU is a good team but we made them work hard today. We had some big hits and our kids adjusted well at the plate. It was nice to get the big lead. Amy (Harre) was dominant today and threw the ball well. I'm happy with this win," said Kerri Blaylock.
Harre allowed just two hits in the fourth inning, struck out five and walked two hitters to improve to 3-0.
The Salukis (5-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and dominated the Hilltoppers (0-1) in WKU's season opener. Jenny Doehring's sacrifice fly drove in the first run and Kelly Creek's two-RBI double gave SIU the 3-0 lead after one inning.
SIU added single runs in the second and sixth innings. Samantha Carter singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error in the second inning. In the sixth, Maria Damico reached on an error, was sacrificed to second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout by Haley Viefhaus for a 5-0 lead.
The Salukis added two runs in the seventh on Katie Jordan's two-run homer to rightfield for the final 7-0 margin. The home run was the second of the year for Jordan.
Doehring went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead SIU. Haley Viefhaus (1-for-3, RBI), Jordan (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Creek (1-for-4, double, 2 RBI) also had big days for the Salukis. Seven of nine SIU starters had a hit in the game.
SIU faces Winthrop in game two at 1:30 p.m. at the Bama Bash Friday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
