Men's Golf Finishes Ninth and Tenth In Spring Opener

Eastover, La. - Southern Illinois University's men's golf team opened its spring season with ninth and 10th place finishes among 14 teams competing at the Methodist Sportscare/New Orleans Classic which ended earlier today.

All 10 Salukis on this year's roster participated and formed two teams designated as SIU and SIU #2. SIU, comprised of Roger Welch, Grant Goltz, Josh Wheeler, Dustin Stewart and Tim Hoss, finished ninth with a two-round score of 608.

Meanwhile, SIU #2 followed close behind in the 10th spot (617). That unit consisted of Andrew Gwinup, Rob Laegeler, Kurt Pfaff, Jason Furlow and Mark Reuschel.

Of the 10 Dawgs competing, Welch posted SIU's best finish as he tied for fourth with a two-day total of 144. Welch fired consecutive rounds of 72. Also placing in the top-15 was Gwinup who carded a 147 after recording rounds of 76 and 71, respectively.

Host New Orleans won the tournament with a 585, while SE Missouri State (586), UMKC (598), Belmont (600), Tulane (600) and Tennessee State (600) rounded out the top six.

The Salukis will return to action at the SE Missouri State Four Ball Invitational March 31-April 1.
