Track and Field Teams Place Third at Spring Classic

Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois' men's and women's track and field teams both finished third at the Spring Invitational Saturday afternoon. The women scored 121.5 points and finished behind Central Michigan (226.5) and Illinois State (137.5). Eastern Illinois was fourth with 110.5 points. EIU took first in the men's field with 137 points followed by Illinois State (105) and SIU (96).
Mills Wins Two--Senior Kevin Mills won both the 100m and the 200m with times of 10.71 and 22.00, respectively. Freshman Maurice Moss was runner-up to Mills in both events running 10.83 in the 100m and 22.01 in the 200m. SIU had the top five times in the 200m with Jeff Young placing third (22.02), Felix Anderson fourth (22.05), and B.J. Davis fifth (22.15).
Young won the 110m-hurdles in 14.44. Freshman Ray Scotten won the pole vault clearing 16-7. SIU's 4x100m relay ran to a first place finish in 40.99 while the 4x400m relay unit ran 3:18.32 for second place.
Chris Cline was second in the hammer throw (149-5) and fourth in the shot put (45-5). Freddy Rule took third in the long jump (19-10.75) and javelin (134-4), and fourth in the discus (99-4). Paul Whitaker cleared 6-2 in the high jump for third.
Emmanuele Parris was runner-up in the 400m (51.83), and Marvin Primo placed fourth (54.28). Sophomore Eli Baker ran third in the 3000m steeplechase (9:49.34). Julien Garcia finished third in the 800m (157:43) and Orane Morgan placed sixth (1:58.66). Tony LaChiana ran sixth in the 5000m (15:34.73).
Dunbar Qualifies for Regionals--Korto Dunbar hit the NCAA regional qualifying mark in the 100m-hurdles breaking the 14.00 barrier for the first time running 13.84 for first place.
Sophomore Kelsey Toussaint and Dunbar finished first and second in the 200m with times of 24.75 and 25.32. Toussaint ran to a first place finish in the 100m clocking a 12.14. Dunbar was third with 12.31, and Inna Turevsky was sixth (13.19).
Katy Ritten and Venisha Williams took first in second in the hammer throw with tosses of 114-2 and 143-8, respectively. Williams and Ritten were second and third in the discus with marks of 134-9 and 126-7. Freshman Janine Batchelor was sixth (116-0.5).
Latrice Gray won the high jump clearing 5-4.25 while Turevsky cleared 5-0.25 to tie for sixth. Turevsky was runner-up in the long jump (18-10.75) and Hilla Meldalia was sixth (17-2.25).
Ritten and Megan Cenkush placed third (42-3.5) and fifth (39-6) in the shot put, and Cenkush was third in the javelin (111-9).
Southern Illinois will compete next Saturday at the Cardinal Challenge hosted by Louisville.
