Carbondale, Ill. - WSIL TV-3 will feature Southern Illinois University's head volleyball coach Sonya Locke on the "Class Act" segment Tuesday, April 22, at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Locke was recently named the Black Coaches Association's 2003 National Female Coach of the Year, and was the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year for leading the Salukis to a third place finish in the regular season league play (12-6) and a runner-up finish to the University of Northern Iowa at the MVC Championships this fall after being picked eighth in the MVC preseason poll. Locke, in her twelfth season at SIU, earned her first 20-win season (23-10), and picked up her 200th career win Oct. 19 at Indiana State. SIU placed two on the MVC all-tournament team and first team all-conference. Eight school records were broken this season.
Not only did the Salukis have success on the court, Locke's team also succeeded in the classroom. SIU earned six spots on the MVC Scholar-Athlete teams, more than any other conference school. In addition, setter Britten Follett was one of six players nationwide to be named to the Verizon Academic All-America First Team with a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a radio and television major. Lindsey Schultz was named to the Verizon Academic All-District V First Team (3.75 GPA, civil engineering) and Kristie Kemner (3.56 GPA, speech pathology) landed a spot on the Second Team.
