INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Sophomore middle blocker Marissa Washington's career-high 10 kills and .714 hitting percentage couldn't keep SIU (1-6) from being swept by tournament host Butler 3-0 in SIU's (1-6) first match at the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana on Friday. Butler (6-3) beat the Salukis 30-18, 30-25, 30-19 in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Washington didn't have an error, collecting 10 kills in just 14 attempts with three block assists. Fellow middle blocker Carrie Shephard, a junior, added seven kills, four digs and three blocks. Freshman setter Holly Marita chipped in with 23 assists and a team-high seven digs in the match. Kelly Harman and Haley Hann each added six kills. SIU outblocked the Bulldogs six to five but Butler hit .362 as a team to just .157 for SIU.
The Salukis will face Appalachian State at 3 p.m. on Saturday, followed by San Francisco at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up its tournament play at the Butler Invitational.
