Women's Golf Finishes Seventh at Minnesota Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- Amy Rankin finished ninth to lead the Southern Illinois University women's golf team to a seventh-place showing at the Minnesota Invitational which ended earlier today. Rankin began the tournament with a 86, but finished strong with back-to-back 76s.
SIU struggled to a 342 in its opening round of the tournament, but improved by 21 strokes in its second set of 18 holes. The Salukis then capped off their 980 mark by shooting a 317 this morning.
For Rankin, the top-10 finish marked her first of the season. Freshman Kelly Gerlach also placed among the top-20 individuals with a 83-80-79--242. She tied for 14th, respectively.
Other Salukis competing at the Minnesota Invite were Megan Tarrolly (86-79-83--248), Tiffany Fritsche (87-86-80--253) and Stefanie Pate (87-86-82--255). Tarrolly finished 32nd, while Fritsche tied for 41st and Pate placed 46th.
Host Minnesota (313-321-309--943) won this year's tournament, while Eastern Washington (321-313-319--953), Bradley (318-313-323--954), Northern Iowa (318-322-319--959) and East Tennessee State (323-321-326--970) rounded out the top five.
SIU returns to action at the Lady Indian Classic in Jonesboro, Ark., Oct. 13-14.
