CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Junior Carrie Shephard's career-high 14 kills and 12 blocks led Southern Illinois to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday at Houck Fieldhouse. Senior Kelly Harman's solo block at match point capped the Salukis 25-30, 30-26, 34-32, 20-30, 15-11 win, snapping SEMO's five-game winning streak.
"It's a good rivalry and no one wants to have a losing streak against anyone so I'm glad it's over and we'll see them next year," said Sonya Locke, SIU head coach.
"This was a big win for our confidence and if we would have lost it would have been a major blow to us especially since we lost a tough five-game match last Friday to Creighton and it bothered us against Drake."
Harman (18 kills, 13 digs) and freshman Jene' Pulliam (career-high 15 kills and 20 digs) and Haley Hann (14 kills, career-high 15 digs) each added double-double performances. Freshman setter Holly Marita had a career-high 61 assists with 17 digs and junior libero Kelly Katricka added 19 digs in just her second match.
"We need performances like this from our upperclassmen and to have three or four people hitting positive numbers to win our matches," added Locke.
SIU will be home this weekend to face Bradley on Friday and Northern Iowa on Saturday in Carbondale. Both matches are at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym.
