CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois was swept by Duke 3-0 (30-15, 31-29, 30-23) in the final match of the Duke Classic on Saturday. The Salukis finished third in the tournament with a 1-2 record. Freshman setter Holly Marita led SIU with 23 assists and was named to the Duke Classic All-Tournament Team.
"I thought we played well enough to win game two but made errors and lost the game. We have to learn how to be consistent in our ball control to avoid that from happening. I thought Holly Marita was better this weekend than last week ad that's a good sign for the team," said SIU Head Coach Sonya Locke.
The Blue Devils hit .301 while the Salukis could only manage a .078 hitting percentage, their lowest of the season. Ashley Saverine and Carrie Shephard led the SIU offense with six kills each, while Ashley Saverine added 10 digs. After losing game one 30-15, SIU led game two 28-27 before losing four of the last five points and the game 31-29.
The Salukis travel to Indianapolis, Indiana next week to compete in the Butler Invitational on September 12-13 at Butler University.
