NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State continued its dominance over Southern Illinois on Friday, sweeping the Salukis 3-0 to win the 27th meeting in the last 28 matches in the series.
The Redbirds 30-22, 30-28, 30-23 win marks the 26th straight regular season win against SIU. Southern Illinois' lone win in the last 28 meetings was in the 2002 MVC Tournament quarterfinals.
"We had a chance to win game two, but we allowed them to score some crucial points and made a couple key errors down the stretch which allowed them to win the game, said a disappointed Sonya Locke, SIU head coach.
"We tried to come back in game three and played them even for a while, but just couldn't sustain any key rallies to win game three or the match."
Illinois State held SIU to a .088 attack percentage and allowed just eight attempts by SIU's leading hitter, Marissa Washington, who hit -.125 with one kill and two errors in her eight attempts. The negative attack percentage is a first in the career of Washington, who entered the match hitting .318 in MVC play and .316 overall.
Jaime Hinsenkamp led SIU with 11 kills and Holly Marita ran the offense with 32 assists. Carrie Shephard and Jene' Pulliam each tallied seven kills for the Salukis. Haley Hann added six kills, while Johannah Yutzy led SIU with a .500 attack percentage (4 kills, 1 error, 6 attempts).
The Redbirds hit .262 as a team, led by Laura Doornbos' 14 kills. Savannah Knowles (.400) and Kari Staehlin (.375) each had eight kills and hit well for Illinois State.
SIU will face Indiana State on Saturday, the only team the Salukis swept in 2003. Southern Illinois has a four-match win streak against the Sycamores and winning records under head coach Sonya Locke (14-11) as well as the all-time series (30-12-1).
The match is set for ISU's Arena at 7 p.m. in Terre Haute, Ind.
