TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Despite five players with double figure kills and a season-high 12 blocks, Southern Illinois (5-15, 3-6 MVC) had its four-match winning streak against Indiana State broken with a 3-1 loss to the Sycamores on Saturday.
Indiana State won the match 30-28, 25-30, 30-25, 30-24 to snap its losing streak against SIU, pulling into a tie with Southern Illinois and Evansville for sixth place, and handing the Salukis its first loss of the year when five players have had double figure kills.
"Their aces (11 to 5) and a few more kills (67 to 60) made the difference in the match and we got down too far in game four (27-17) to win the final game," said Sonya Locke, SIU head coach.
"I thought we blocked well, but it didn't turn into a win. Marissa (Washington), Jene' (Pulliam) and Carrie (Shephard) played well tonight and I hope we see more performances like we saw tonight."
SIU couldn't pull out a win in game one, trailing just 29-28, before Indiana State finished with a kill. After winning game two, Southern Illinois was tied 20-20 in game three, before the Sycamores outscored the Salukis 10-5 to win the third game. SIU trailed 27-17 in game four, and pulled to within 29-24, but couldn't get any closer, losing the game 30-24 and the match 3-1.
Pulliam led SIU with 14 kills and a .364 attack percentage with a season-high four blocks. Shephard and Jaime Hinsenkamp each added 12 kills. Shephard added nine digs and a season-high five block assists to her total. Washington hit .360 with 11 kills and completed her third double-double with 10 digs and five blocks, including three solo blocks. Haley Hann was the fifth Saluki to rack up double figure kills with ten with four blocks.
Holly Marita led the offense with her eighth double-double of the year, including 50 assists and 13 digs. Erica Miller led the defense with 16 digs and Ashley Saverine chipped in 15 digs.
Indiana State was led by Ann Lidester (19 kills, 10 digs), Sarah Smith (18 kills), Kristin Widmar (16 kills, 9 digs) and Kerri Bynum (54 assists, 17 digs). Kelly Spisak had 23 digs for the Sycamores.
The Salukis are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 19 against Evansville at home at 7 p.m.
