CARBONDALE, Ill. - On a night when Southern Illinois won a game one thriller 37-35, and had four athletes with double figure kills, errors came back to haunt the Salukis in the end. Creighton won the next three games 30-17, 30-25, 30-23 and the match 3-1 on Friday at Davies Gym.
We just made too many errors tonight and that's what hurt us," added a disappointed Sonya Locke, SIU head coach. "We lost control of the match in game two and you can't do that against Creighton, they're too good of a team."
Following the first game, Creighton jumped out to 10-3 and 20-10 leads in game two, and controlled the rest of the match, led by Leah Ratzlaff's 27 kills, 12 digs and .397 attack percentage (27K, 4E, 58TA). As a team, CU hit .295 and held the Salukis to .220 for the match.
Errors played a key role, as the Bluejays had just one service receiving error, while SIU had nine service receiving errors and eight more attack errors and their opponent. Creighton also dominated the net, with 13 blocks to just three for Southern Illinois.
Carrie Shephard's 16 kills led SIU, Haley Hann hit a team-high .294 with 15 kills, and Jene' Pulliam and Jaime Hinsenkamp each added 14 kills in the loss. Holly Marita added her 10th double-double with 54 assists and 11 digs. Defensively, Erica Miller's 26 digs led the Salukis and is a new career-high.
Southern Illinois faces Drake at 3 p.m. Saturday at Davies Gym, in an attempt to hold on to sixth place (the final spot for the MVC Tournament) heading into next week.
