INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Southern Illinois men's swimming and diving team took on Big Ten powers, Iowa, #13 Indiana and #17 Purdue Saturday at the IU Natatorium. The Salukis knocked off Iowa, 187-150, while falling to Indiana (156-131) and Purdue (180.5-117.5).
Iowa was swept by Indiana (185.5-93.5) and Purdue (208-86) while Indiana and Purdue did not face-off, as they will meet later in the season.
The Salukis (2-4) picked up a wins in four individual events as Marcelo Possato re-broke his school record set two weeks ago at Northwestern in the 200 backstroke in a provisional qualifying time of 1:46.63. He also won the100 back in a time of 49.08.
Jason Sigler won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 9:25.36, a career performance for the junior. He also finished second in the 500 free in a time of 4:36.88.
Freshman Antonio Santoro won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:40.06, while junior Miguel King finished in third in 58.53 in the 100 breast.
SIU's 400 free relay of Sigler, Case Gasparovich, Possato and Santoro finished second in 3:08.71 behind Indiana.
The Salukis take a break from competition until January 8 when they travel to Fort Pierce, Fla. to take on Texas Christian, Tampa and Indian River Community College.
