DELAND, Fla. - Southern Illinois (2-6) rounds out the non-conference portion of its schedule when it plays at Stetson University (1-5) on Tuesday at 6 p.m., CST.
SERIES HISTORY
SIU meets Stetson for the first time Tuesday. The Salukis will look to win their second straight game after beating Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 18.
LAST TIME OUT
SIU shot a season-high 53.5 percent (23-of-43) and connected on 15-of-24 free throws en route to a 69-64 win over Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 18. Danette Jones drained seven three-pointers and scored 28 points to pace the Dawgs.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
Another road win would make a nice present for SIU, as Tuesday's game marks the Salukis' last until after Christmas. When SIU returns from Florida, it will break until Dec. 31, where it opens conference play at home against Drake. The Salukis also host Creighton on Jan. 2.
SCOUTING THE HATTERS
Stetson, who opened its 2004-05 season with five straight games on the road, is currently on a five-game losing streak.
The Hatters are recently coming off a 62-60 loss to Florida A&M on Dec. 18.
Three Stetson players, including Kristy Brown, Nefertiti Walker (14.0 ppg) and Kim Manning (10.0 ppg) are averaging double-digits. Brown averages a double-double 17 points and 10.8 rebounds to top the Hatters after six games this season.
ARE YOU SERIOUS?
SIU's leading scorer, Danette Jones' 25 three-pointers this season outweigh the total of treys made by Stetson's entire team. The Hatters are shooting just 28.8 percent from downtown after making 21-of-73 treys in six games.
MIAMI VICE
In front of a big following of family and friends, Miami, Fla., native Daphney Desamours performed well against Bethune-Cookman. Desamours tied a career-high 22 points on 6-of-11 field goals, 1-of-2 three-pointers and 9-of-13 free throws. She also hauled down three rebounds, dished out five assists, gathered one block and had a steal. Desamours' double-digit effort marked her eighth in a row this season.
JONES TIES SCHOOL RECORD
Danette Jones' seven three-pointers, including six in the first half against Bethune-Cookman (12/18) tied SIU's all-time single-game record. Her barrage of treys matched Karrie Redeker's seven which came against Northern Iowa on Feb. 6, 1992. Jones also tied several other players in the league who made seven three-pointers in a game, which ties for third on the Valley's all-time single-game list.
CLOSING IN
Danette Jones' assault on the school's career three-point record continues. A native of Salem, Ill., Jones currently ranks third with 108 threes, as one of only five Salukis who drained 100 or more bombs in their careers. A senior, Jones is 108-of-320 (33.8 percent) all-time from behind the three-point arc.
FREE THROWS HELP
One thing head coach Dana Eikenberg said after her Salukis beat Bethune-Cookman on Saturday was how her team did a good job of getting to the free throw line. In fact, the aggressive Dawgs managed to make 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) free throws, including 13-of-22 in the second half. Daphney Desamours accounted for 9-of-13 makes to lead all Salukis at the charity stripe.
NICE SHOOTING
SIU shot a blazing 53.5 percent against Bethune-Cookman en route to its second win in three games. The Dawgs made 23-of-43 field goals, including 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) in the first half and 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) in the second.
NEXT UP FOR THE DAWGS
SIU breaks for the holidays before opening conference play at home on Dec. 31. The Salukis will host Creighton at 6:05 p.m.
