CARBONDALE, Ill. - The wind blowing across the Hickory Ridge golf course proved to be a factor Sunday for many of the women's golf teams participating in the 10th annual Saluki Invitational. Despite the warm breeze, the Saluki golfers placed themselves in second after one round of play.
SIU (317) is just seven strokes behind Michigan, who has 310 points to lead the field. Northern Iowa (320), Illinois State (324), Murray State (330) and Southwest Missouri State (330) round out the top six teams.
Senior Megan Tarrolly shot a first round 75 to lead the Salukis, while fellow senior Amy Rankin is tied for 12th place with a score of 80. Freshmen Kelly Gerlach and Samantha Sutzer both sit in a tie for 17th place. The two shot rounds 81 to help SIU finish the first day in second place.
Stefanie Pate (83) and sister Sara Pate (93) finished the first day in 27th and 82nd, respectively.
Illinois State's Hilary Anderson posted a first round par-72 for the best score of the day, and was just one of three golfers to have a score in the all-time top ten first round times of the tournament. Michigan's Laura Olin and Ashlee Johnson of Illinois State, who is competing as an individual, also scored marks in the all-time top ten.
