Women's Basketball Places Three on MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Three Southern Illinois University women's basketball players, including Katie Berwanger, Danette Jones and Dana Pinkston were named to the 2004 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Teams, as voted by the league's sports information directors. Berwanger and Jones each garnered second-team honors, while Pinkston was named honorable mention.
For Berwanger, this year marks the second straight that she has earned MVC Scholar-Athlete honors. A native of Lake Zurich, Ill., Berwanger is a senior who carries a 3.83 GPA in Art and Design. She was also named honorable mention all-MVC Scholar-Athlete in 2003.
Meanwhile, this year marks the first time both Jones and Pinkston have been voted to the league's scholar-athlete teams. A junior, Jones hails from Salem, Ill., and sports a 3.82 GPA in Elementary Education, while senior Pinkston (Junction, Ill.) holds a 3.50 GPA in Recreation.
Statistically, Berwanger leads the Salukis with 8.4 rebounds per game this season. As for Pinkston and Jones, they rank as SIU's top two scorers. Pinkston holds a team-best 11.1 points per game average and Jones follows with a 9.2 ppg mark.
