MARTIN, Tenn. - Senior Lindsey Bonnell's first career home run and career-high five RBI highlighted a season-high 13-hit attack as SIU (24-6) shutout Tennessee-Martin (17-10) 10-0 in five innings on Thursday in Martin, Tennessee. The victory extended SIU's winning streak to 11 games, including an all-time record of 4-0 versus Tenn.-Martin.
"I was really pleased with the way we hit the ball. I thought we attacked from the get go and it really started with Lauren Roney leading off the game with a single. Jenny Doehring, Katie Jordan and Kelly Creek all hit the ball well. Lindsey Bonnell hit the ball really well and I told her in practice yesterday that she would hit a home run this year since she's been hitting the ball so well and I thought she was due," said an excited Kerri Blaylock, SIU head coach.
Amy Harre allowed just three hits, struck out six and walked no one to improve to 9-1. Harre dominated the game, allowing just five total baserunners, with only one runner reaching second base. She struck out UTM's Megan Mizell for the final out of the game.
"I thought Amy (Harre) did a great job setting the tone. After their leadoff hitter singled Amy just shut them down and controlled the game after that hit. I told the kids that I wanted to come out and play well to get a jump start for the weekend and I thought we did," added Blaylock.
Southern opened the game with a run in its first at bat. Roney led off the game with a single, but was erased on a fielder's choice by Samantha Carter. After Carter stole her sixth base of the year, Doehring walked to set up Jordan. The cleanup hitter singled through the leftside, driving in Carter and giving SIU a 1-0 lead.
SIU put the game away with seven runs in the third inning on six hits and two errors, sending ten batters to the plate. Roney led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by Carter. Doehring singled to set runners up on the corners for Jordan, who doubled to drive in Roney for a 2-0 lead. Haley Viefhaus reached on an error to load the bases.
After an SIU strikeout, Creek singled with two outs to drive in Doehring and Jordan, giving SIU a 4-0 lead. Following the Creek single, Adie Viefhaus singled to drive in sister, Haley, for a 5-0 advantage and setting up a bit of history. Bonnell hit her first career home run, a three-run blast to leftfield, to give SIU an 8-0 lead after three innings.
The Salukis weren't satisfied with the 8-0 lead, adding two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Louis singled with one out and moved to second on a Creek single. Maria Damico pinch ran for Creek before Adie Viefhaus singled to load the bases for Bonnell, who singled to leftfield to drive in Damico and Louis for the career-high RBI's and a 10-0 lead.
UTM's Nicole Davis (7-4) allowed eight runs (four earned) on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts in the loss.
In addition to Bonnell's career day (2-for-3, HR, 5 RBI), Jordan (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI), Doehring (2-for-2, run), Louis (1-for-3, run), Adie Viefhaus (2-for-3, run, RBI), Roney (2-for-3, run) and Creek (2-for-3, run, 2 RBI) contributed to the season-high 13-hit total.
