BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In an eventful day, which included the unvailing of new lights at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex, and the honoring of Indiana's Olympians, the Saluki track and field teams sat third after the first day of the Indiana Relays.
After a complete day of competition, the IU women's team led with 106 points, followed by Central Michigan with 99 points. Southern Illinois finished the day with 80.50 points, and finally Indiana State had 61.50 points. The Salukis ended day one with 12 top five finishes in just eight events.
The middle distance races saw junior Kelsey Toussaint and freshman Sherlenia Green snag two of those top five finishes in the 400-meter dash. The duo, who finished third and fourth, ran the two fastest times of the season for SIU in the event with times of 55.76 and 56.44, respectively.
In the 800-meter run, sophomore Ty-Nica Davis improved her time this season by nearly three seconds to 2:13.84 to take the race title. She was followed in third place by freshman Sarah Rinker, who crossed the finish line in 2:16.75 - improving by more than a second.
Senior Noa Beitler and Rinker continued to swap places in the 1500-meter run as Beitler won this weekend's battle and captured the victory with a season team best time of 4:37.58, while Rinker clocked in at 4:45.52 for third place.
Freshman Cherylynn Schilling finished seventh in the long 5000-meters with a season best time of 17:44.21, which is less than a second from qualifying for the NCAA regional meet.
Senior captain Korto Dunbar once again ran the 100-meter hurdles in a regional qualifying time. It was the second time in three weeks that Dunbar had qualified. Dunbar was the runner-up in the event at the Indiana Relays with a time of 13.95.
