Muhammad Abdulqaadir Awaits This Weekend's NFL Draft

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Muhammad Abdulqaadir, who recently capped off two stellar seasons with the Southern Illinois University football team, is confident he will either be picked during this weekend's National Football League draft or catch on with a team as a free agent.
"All I'm hoping for is to get into camp, because I have a strong feeling once I get into a camp, I don't see why I can't make a team," Abdulqaadir told the media at a press conference in Lingle Hall on Thursday.
Abdulqaadir said he was projected as a late round pick heading into the 2003 season, but his performance in the Las Vegas All American Classic in January and subsequent draft camps may have boosted his status.
He said the Indianapolis Colts and the New York Giants have shown the most interest, while the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans have also contacted him.
"I don't have a preference," he said. "I just want to go out there and play football."
Abdulqaadir said NFL scouts have told him they view him initially as a situational player, meaning he could be used on special teams, kick returns and on third downs. He took their advice and has incorporated 100 pass catches per day to his daily workout routine.
Abdulqaadir said he has been working out with teammate Tom Koutsos, and the two supported each other during their recent pro timing day on campus. Koutsos, who graduated from SIU last December, is also hoping to be drafted.
"It was really a blessing to play with somebody like Tommy," Abdulqaadir said.
After transferring to SIU from Coffeyville Community College, Abdulqaadir rushed for 1331 yards in 2002 and 1,041 yards in 2003. He scored 32 touchdowns in 19 games as a Saluki.
