CARBONDALE, Ill. - Yvonne Cohen is the fourth sprinter on a 4x100-meter relay team that has surpassed a nearly 15-year-old school record three times this season. Yet, she is the most unknown member of the team, which boasts three of the fastest sprinters in Saluki history.
Cohen looks to change her celebrity status somewhat this Friday at the Billy Hayes Invitational, hosted by Indiana - SIU's last regular season meet of the season.
Senior Korto Dunbar, junior Kelsey Toussaint and freshman Sherlenia Green have taken much of the spotlight with regards to the powerful sprinting group at Southern Illinois University. Cohen, a junior transfer from Barton County Coummunity College, has blended well into the quartet that has a season-best time of 45.93. The time is just .14 seconds from the NCAA Regional qualifying standard.
The Billy Hayes Invite, named in honor of former Hoosier head coach Earle C. Hayes, is expected to bring a multitude of talent to Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Complex in Bloomington, Ind. The meet is scheduled to begin with the women's hammer throw at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 7, and end with the men's 4x400-meter relay, which is slated for 8:20 p.m.
Final results and recap of the Billy Hayes Invitational will be posted upon completion of the day's action at the official web site of Saluki athletics at www.SIUSalukis.com.
