CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University volleyball team will open the 2004 fall season on Wednesday, August 11 with two-a-day practices in preparation for the upcoming season. The Salukis return five starters and nine athletes that started at least one match from a young squad that went 7-23 with three freshman and a sophomore in the starting lineup. "We're ready to go. Our excitement lies in what's going to come down the road with this team. We're going to get in the gym and work as hard as we can. This is a veteran team now, with us returning almost everyone from last year's team that played significant time. We'll be very focused during camp and prepare to put us in a position to accomplish our goals," said Sonya Locke, SIU head coach. SIU will practice twice a day through Saturday, August 21, prior to school starting on Monday, August 23. The staff plans to target a few key areas during the two-a-day practice sessions. "We just want to work on our defense so that we can become consistent, work on becoming a better serving team and build on our offensive chemistry during those 11 days," added Locke. SIU opens the season with against Georgetown on September 3 at the Trosclair Memorial Tournament in New Orleans, La. The Salukis will also face host Tulane and Nicholls State on September 4.
