CARBONDALE, Ill. - Ashley Saverine led Southern Illinois with 16 kills and 11 digs and Marissa Washington hit .450, but SIU lost a 2-1 lead and the match to UMKC 3-2. The Kangaroos came from behind to win the match 30-20, 21-30, 25-30, 30-23, 15-8.
UMKC came from behind due to the play of Vanessa Portela and Angela Melka, who each had 20 kills apiece. Melka added 14 digs.
"It's real difficult to win when you have 14 service errors and 15 reception errors. We had three great performances from Marissa, Ashley and Katy (DeWulf) to give us balance, but we couldn't pull out the match," said Sonya Locke, SIU head coach.
The Salukis hit a season-high .261 and added a season-best 10 blocks, but SIU had just four aces to 15 for the Kangaroos, which played a key factor in the UMKC comeback.
Saverine hit .406 (16 kills, 3 errors, 32 attempts), Washington had ten kills and one error in 20 attempts with four blocks. Haley Hann added 11 kills and four blocks.
Murhysboro native Katy DeWulf hit .600 (7 kills, one error, 10 attempts) with four blocks in the first match of her career. Holly Marita had 51 assists, six kills and six digs. Erica Miller chipped in with 18 digs in the loss.
The Salukis will wrap up play at the 25th Saluki Invitational against Wyoming tonight around 7:00 p.m.
