NORMAL, ILL. - Southern Illinois University's women's golf team finished fourth in the Illinois State Redbird Classic ending earlier today. The team shot a 313 in the final round to secure the fourth place finish of the nine teams competing. Sophomore Kelly Gerlach, in sixth place heading into the final round, shot a 74 to finish in a tie for fourth out of 51 individuals competing in the tournament.
Gerlach, shot 76-79-74--229 to lead the Salukis while Josie Lowder (82-78-79--239) also had a top-20 finish, in a tie for 18th place. Samantha Sutzer (78-80-84--242) and Stefanie Pate (80-82-80--242) were not far behind in a tie for 23rd. Natalie Parker (91-84-80--255) also competed for SIU.
"We played respectable for the first outing of the season, but we didn't play up to our potential," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "We had too many penalty shots and too many chip shots. We definitely played younger than I expected us to play."
Illinois State University (899) won the tournament, shooting under 300 in the final two rounds of the tournament. Bradley (940) finished second and Northern Iowa (944) third, after both teams were tied for second going into the final round of the tournament.
"We played against conference competition and some great golf teams," added Daugherty. "Illinois State is a tough team, and we know we have seven months until the conference meet to improve."
