Byrne Named Cross Country Athlete of the Week

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Junior Joe Byrne became the second Southern Illinois University cross country student-athlete this season to win the Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week award.

A native of Down Patrick, Ireland, Byrne registered a time of 24:39.97 to lead SIU to a first-place finish at the Eastern Illinois University Panther Open (Sept. 17). Byrne also won the individual title at the event, his second of the season. Additionally, his time last week is tops on the MVC men's 8K best list.

Byrne joins Jessica Ordway, who was named MVC Athlete of the Week on Sept. 7.
