PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Despite four Salukis with double figure kills and digs and three with double-double performances, Southern Illinois (4-9) lost 30-19, 30-23, 26-30, 30-22 to Long Island (10-4) in its final match at the Pittsburgh Classic. The 3-1 loss left SIU winless in its three matches over the weekend.
"It just wasn't a good day for us, especially in comparison to the way we have been playing recently," stated Sonya Locke, SIU head coach. "Our defense has been consistent and I'm pretty happy about that, but we're not playing with confidence and consistency on offense, which makes it hard to win."
The Salukis hit .172 following the record-low .009 against Dayton, led by Haley Hann (13 kills), Johannah Yutzy (12), Marissa Washington (11) and Jaime Hinsenkamp (10) who all had double figures in kills. Yutzy set a career-high with 12 kills, a .391 attack percentage (12 kills, 3 errors, 23 attempts) and 23 attempts.
Washington, who didn't play against Dayton, recorded her second career double-double (11 kills, 13 digs) and was joined by Hinsenkamp (10 kills, 10 digs) and Holly Marita (49 assists, 10 digs). Erica Miller's 19 digs led the SIU defense.
Southern Illinois improved to .172 for the match, but allowed Long Island to hit .318, the best outing against the Salukis all season, led by 19 kills from the Blackbird's Dana Demayo.
The Salukis are back to MVC play next weekend, on the road at Drake (Oct. 1) and Creighton (Oct. 2).
