Volleyball Swept By Dayton At Pittsburgh Classic

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Without the services of leading hitter Marissa Washington, Southern Illinois (4-8) was swept 3-0 by Dayton (7-5), after hitting just .009 in the morning match at the Pittsburgh Classic, the worst recorded hitting percentage in school history. The Flyers hit .265 for the match to dominate the Salukis.
SIU lost 30-23, 30-23, 30-14 following hitting percentages of .200 in game one, .179 in game two and a shocking -.382 in game three, which included just four kills and 17 errors in 34 attempts. The Salukis finished the match just one kill above having not having a hitting percentage with 34 kills and 33 errors in 108 total attempts.
"We had a bad morning and didn't play well," said a surprised Sonya Locke, SIU head coach. "We tried some different combinations of players, but they didn't work."
SIU was led by Haley Hann, who had eight kills, four blocks and three digs with a .222 hitting percentage. Jene' Pulliam, the only other Saluki to hit on the positive side (.083), added five kills.
Carrie Shephard chipped in with six kills, seven digs, two aces and two blocks. Monica Laird's 28 assists was a career-high and Erica Miller led the defense with 19 digs.
Dayton's Faye Barhorst had a match-high 21 kills and .591 attack percentage.
Southern Illinois wraps up play at the Pittsburgh Classic against Long Island at 4 p.m.
