MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Southern Illinois University women's golf team came back strong in day three of the Bay Tree Classic, tying a school record 293 to climb three spots and finish seventh of 17 teams.
The team's goal was to shoot a 305 or better each round of the tournament and sat tied for fifth place with a 306 after day one. A 324 on day two of the tournament set the team back to tenth place, but four scores in the 70s in the final round of the tournament was a great boost, and gave the team a 923 finish, third-best in Saluki history.
"We're a young team. The 324 in the second round set us back, but we couldn't do anything about it today, it was over," said head coach Diane Daugherty. "Today was a fantastic day of golf for the team. They didn't let day two get them down, they fought back."
Sophomore Kelly Gerlach (70-84-71) shot a career-best 225 for the tournament to finish ninth individually. Stefanie Pate (78-83-72--233) shot a career-low 72 in the third round to finish 28th followed close by Samantha Sutzer (79-80-75--234) finishing 30th.
Other golfers included Josie Lowder (81-81-75--237) and Christine Zoerlein (79-80-83--242).
North Carolina-Wilmington (891) shot a tournament-low 288 in the final round to knock day-two leader Coastal Carolina University (898) to second place in the final standings. East Tennessee State (908), Middle Tennessee State (911) and tournament host College of Charleston (913) rounded out the top five.
"This tournament was a learning experience for the team," said Daugherty. "It is something we can definitely build on."
The team travels to Jonesboro, Ark., Oct. 11-12, for the Arkansas State Lady Indian Classic on their way to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Kent Youel Classic Oct. 26-27.
