NEW ORLEANS, La. - Junior Marissa Washington and sophomore Haley Hann each had 10 kills and Monica Laird picked up her second career double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs, but Southern Illinois lost its season opener to Georgetown 30-28, 30-20, 18-30, 30-25 at the Trosclair Memorial Tournament at Tulane University. "I think that we have proven that when we pass well and keep our offense upbeat, we will win. Unfortunately, we only did that in game three," said Sonya Locke, SIU head coach. Down 2-0, the Salukis forced a fourth game with a 30-18 win in game three. SIU jumped out to a 10-2 lead behind six straight points off serve by Erica Miller and passed well to prove Locke's point in the third game. Despite a better hitting percentage (.187 to .174) and more digs (65 to 47), SIU lost the match 3-1. The Hoyas had 11 aces to just six for the Salukis. Washington hit an impressive .409 (10 kills, 1 error, 22 attempts) with three blocks to lead the Saluki offense. "Marissa's performance was what I expected and it was great to have her perform like I know she can," added Locke. Senior Carrie Shephard also played well, hitting .389 (8 kills, 1 error, 18 attempts). Sophomore Holly Marita added 25 assists and eight digs and fellow sophomore Jene' Pulliam pitched in with nine kills and nine digs. Freshman Jaime Hinsenkamp added a career-high eight kills in her first college match. Sophomore Ashley Saverine chipped in with seven kills. The Salukis will face host Tulane at 1 p.m. and Nicholls State at 4:30 in Fogelman Arena on Saturday to wrap up the tournament.
