CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Creighton volleyball team posted five players with double-digit kills and digs as the Bluejays came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Southern Illinois Saturday afternoon 3-2 in Davies Gym.
The game broke the sixth-place Missouri Valley Conference tie between the two teams, dropping the Salukis to 6-12 on the season and 3-6 in the Valley, good for seventh place. The Bluejays maintain sixth place, posting a 10-10 overall record, 4-5 in conference play.
Middle blocker Marissa Washington led the Salukis with a career-high 18 kills, for a .405 average. The senior had only three errors in 37 attempts, adding three digs and two block assists in the five-game set.
Haley Hann posted the fifth double-double of her career with a season-high 14 kills, 15 digs and two block assists. Johannah Yutzy added 11 kills, eight digs and five block assists, while Jene' Pulliam recorded 10 kills and six digs.
Freshman libero Kristy Elswick posted a career-high 32 digs in just her 18th match as a Saluki. Her tally is the second-best mark in Valley play this season and the fourth-best mark in school history.
During the second game of the match, Saluki setter Holly Marita passed Kim Golebiewski as the third all-time setter in school history with her 23rd of 51 assists on the day. The junior added 11 digs as well, posting her 25th career double-double. Her match total brings her career total to 2,825, passing Kim Golebiewski's mark of 2,796.
Both teams hit comparable in the match, the Salukis .193 to the Bluejays' .197, but Creighton seemed to gain momentum as the match progressed, while the Salukis diminished. The Bluejays hit .043 to the Salukis' .333 the first game to .368 versus the Salukis' .074 in the fifth and final game of the match.
Bluejay hitters Kelly Goc and Leah Ratzlaff recorded 24 and 23 kills respectively to lead all hitters.
Creighton's defense posted 101 digs to Southern's 84, the second-best mark in the conference this season.
The Salukis host Bradley and Northern Iowa next weekend, Oct. 21-22, at 7 p.m. in Davies Gym.
