Men's Golf finishes third at ORU Invitational

TULSA, Okla. - The Southern Illinois University golf team slipped in the final round of the ORU Invitational Tuesday, posting a 19-over-par 307, but was able to hang on and finish the tournament in third place. The ORU Invitational marked the final tournament of the fall schedule for the men's golf team.
Hosted by Oral Roberts University, the ORU Invitational was a 54-hole tournament that took place at Battle Creek Golf Club. The par-72 course played at 7,190 yards.
"We could not get anything good to happen today," said SIU Head Golf Coach Leroy Newton. "It was just a tough go-around for everybody."
The Salukis started off strong in the first round with a 7-over 295 but struggled in the latter rounds with a 304 in the second and 307 in the third, for a tournament-total 906.
Host Oral Roberts University took the lead from SIU in the second round and held on to win with a 24-over-par 888.
ORU's Robert Pancratz, who was playing as an individual, won the tournament with a 3-over 219.
"The golf course was difficult but after we shot 295 in the first round, we thought we could go even lower," said Newton. "We were hitting the ball pretty good, but when we made a mistake, we couldn't score."
Senior co-captain Sean McNemar led the Salukis throughout the 54-hole tournament, finishing in a tie for seventh with a 7-over-par 79 in the final round for a tournament-total 224.
Chad Cooper posted his best finish of the fall as he carded a final-round 73 to finish in a tie for 13th with a 10-over-par 226.
Junior Mark Schmitz followed up Cooper, finishing in a tie for 21st. Schmitz recorded a 6-over 78 in the final round, for a 13-over-par 229.
Roger Welch finished 25th as he shot a final-round 77, for a tournament-total 230. Daniel Tomlin rounded out scoring for the Salukis as she shot an 82 in the final round, finishing 38th with a 239.
"We're glad the fall season is over because we know where we are and we can get to working on things and conditioning for the spring," said Newton. "We know we can play well when we get it all together."
The next tournament for SIU will be Feb. 19-20, 2006 at the Pizza Hut/BellSouth Shootout at Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Choctaw, Miss.
