NORMAL, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University volleyball team was swept by Illinois State in Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday in Redbird Arena.
The Redbirds (15-8, 11-2) maintained their hold on second-place in the Valley, beating the Salukis (9-14, 5-8), 30-23, 30-21, 30-21).
The Redbirds out-hit SIU, .340 to .154, recording 11 more kills and 14 more digs than the Salukis. Illinois State also forced the Southern defense to commit 10 serve receive errors.
Freshman Kristie Berwanger led the Salukis with a career-high 12 kills and three blocks, hitting .370 with two errors in 27 attempts at the net.
Katy DeWulf added nine kills for the Salukis, while Johannah Yutzy recorded seven kills, adding five digs and five blocks.
Holly Marita and Monica Laird combined for 29 assists, while Kristy Elswick posted a team-high 13 digs.
Southern returns home to Carbondale for the final time this season when they host Wichita State and Missouri State Friday and Saturday in Davies Gym at 7 p.m.
