ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Katy DeWulf and Johannah Yutzy represent the Southern Illinois volleyball team on the 2005 All-Academic teams the Missouri Valley Conference office announced Tuesday. Both athletes earned honorable mention honors.
DeWulf, a sophomore from Murphysboro, Ill., carries a 3.95 grade point average in business and administration with a chemistry minor. She was third on the team this season, averaging 2.57 kills per game with 47 blocks at outside hitter. She was the only Saluki to start all 28 matches, playing in 97 games. She was also honored by ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA, earning Academic All-District Five third-team honors this season.
Yutzy was one of three Salukis to play in all 98 games this season. The middle hitter led the team in kills (310), kills per game (3.10) and hitting percentage (.365). The Plain City, Ohio native was second in blocks with 93. Her season percentage is sixth all-time in the conference this season and second in SIU history. The junior carries a 3.11 GPA in marketing.
Wichita State posted the most spots on the first-team and honorable mention list with a combined total of six. Missouri State was second with four and Creighton, Drake and Illinois State all notched three. The Bluejays totaled a league-high three players on the first-team.
The criteria for the Valley's Scholar-Athlete Team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average. Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular season, reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institution and completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
