ST. LOUIS, Mo. - By a vote of league coaches, Southern Illinois volleyball players Johannah Yutzy and Kristy Elswick earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors, the league office announced Wednesday. Yutzy was named to the first team and Elswick to the all-freshman team.
This is the first year since 2003 that a Saluki has earned league honors.
Elswick established herself as one of the top liberos in the conference, ranking second and third in the MVC in digs, averaging 5.35 in league play and 4.91 overall respectively.
The freshman from Louisville, Ky. was also second overall and first in league play in service aces with 41 on the year. She was also fourth on the team in assists (29) and second in serve reception percentage (.937) in a team-high 732 attempts. Her 481 digs this season is second in school history, just 22 digs away from the record.
Yutzy also made her mark in the record books, but at the net. The junior middle blocker hit .365 on the year, to rank third in the MVC this season and sixth in the conference record books. Her mark is second all-time at SIU, while her career mark of .302 through three seasons currently ranks third. Of those MVC athletes ranking in the top ten in kill percentage, she posted the most kills, also leading the team with 310, averaging 3.16 kills per game. She added 1.68 digs per game and 93 blocks, including 14 solo and 79 assists.
The Plain City, Ohio native finished the regular season ranked seventh in points, averaging 4.13 during league play and 3.85 overall, ranking 10th. She was also named to the 2005 Wildcat Classic All-Tournament team in September, and most recently named to the Honorable Mention MVC All-Academic team.
The regular season league champion, Wichita State earned four players on the first team, while Missouri State posted three and Illinois State, two. Yutzy is the only first-team selection that will not participate in this weekend's MVC tournament.
