Football leads Gateway Conference with Five Academic All-Conference Picks

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Saluki football team led the Gateway Conference with five players on the Academic All-Conference team, the league office announced Monday.
First-team members from SIU were quarterback Joel Sambursky, cornerback Brad Brachear and tight end Chris Kupec. Offensive tackle Andrew Kernes and linebacker Tony Rinella were named second team.
Linebacker Phillip Doyle, return specialist Craig Turner and fullback J.T. Wise earned honorable mention.
Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions (freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
League sports information directors voted on the team by designating 11 players for first-team honors and 11 players for second-team honors.
Three weeks ago, the Salukis had five players (Sambursky, Brachear, Kernes, Rinella and Wise) named CoSIDA Academic All-District. SIU led the nation among I-A and I-AA schools with the most all-district selections.
