Women's Basketball Loses to Indiana State, 94-51
CARBONDALE, Ill. - Melanie Boeglin became Indiana State's (19-7, 12-5) all-time career leader in steals, as she had six to go along with a game-high 22 points in a dominating 94-51 win over Southern Illinois (3-21, 1-14) earlier tonight at SIU Arena.
Boeglin shot 9-of-14 from the field, including 1-of-1 from three-point land. She also knocked down 3-of-5 at the free throw line, pulled down three rebounds and dished out three assists in 29 minutes.
INS led the entire game, and used a 17-2 first half run to blow the game open.
Ahead 12-11 with 13:12 left in the game's opening 20 minutes, Ashley Clark scored four points, while Boeglin added three to fuel the surge, which gave INS a 29-13 lead at the 7:35 mark.
INS would then go on to take a 48-23 lead at the break.
SIU was held to under 30 points in each half, as the Sycamores coasted to the final 94-51 win.
Throw in the fact that INS shot 52.3 percent (34-of-65) from the field, registered 17 steals and saw every player on its roster score at least two points, the Sycamores were seemingly unstoppable.
Rachel Maenpaa (13), Lisa Verhoff (13) and Clark (12) also joined Boeglin with double figures in the scoring column.
The Sycamores also outrebounded the Dawgs, 37-23, including a 16-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Not to mention, INS only turned the ball over 12 times, as opposed to SIU's 28 turnovers.
Elyse Morris had a career-high 22 points on 9-of-15 field goals, including 4-of-5 three-pointers to lead the Salukis.
Ironically, Morris surpassed her previous career-high of 19, which also came against the Sycamores earlier this year.
Lecretia Akines followed with eight points.
SIU plays its final home game of the season Sunday when it hosts Illinois State. Tip-off is at 2:05 p.m., as the Salukis say goodbye to seniors Danette Jones, Wendy Goodman, Akines and Daphney Desamours.
