CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team will head south for spring break on a two-tournament swing to Texas and Oklahoma. The Salukis will take part in the Sam Houston State Bearkat Classic Friday and Saturday Mar. 11-12 at the Raven's Nest Golf Club in Huntsville, Texas, before traveling to Oklahoma City, Okla. Monday and Tuesday Mar. 14-15, for the Oklahoma City Spring Classic at the Lincoln Park Golf Course.
"We're using this trip as an opportunity to play as much golf as we can because of the weather here," Saluki head coach Leroy Newton said. "We're going to see a lot of good teams at these tournaments and hopefully some of the guys can step up and play well."
SIU will be one of 14 teams at the Bearkat Classic along with Tennessee State, Oral Roberts and UMKC. The field at the OCU Spring Classic will consist of some of the top Division II and NAIA golf teams in the country.
The Salukis are coming off of a sixth place finish at the rain-shortened Jackson State/Pizza Hut Invitational. The team combined to shoot a 304 through 18 holes. Junior Sean McNemar and sophomore Andrew Gwinup tied for 10th place, each with a 74.
