Jumpers, Distance Runners Compete Day One of Vanderbilt Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior distance runner Joe Byrne recorded a personal-best 9:07.17 to win the 3000 meter steeplechase and regionally qualify for the NCAA meet Friday night at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
Nine Saluki athletes competed on the Vanderbilt Track in the first day of the two-day meet earning eight top-ten finishes.
Rob Duncan and Kyle Monroe each posted personal-bests in the 1500 meter run. Duncan finished second in 3:55.09, while Monroe (3:57.39) finished sixth.
Long jumpers Kenen Shadd and Jason Pochynok finished seventh and 10th respectively. Shadd jumped a season-best 22-05.25, while Pochynok posted a leap of 21-07.25.
For the women, Katie Birn posted a second-place finish in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:55.00, while Shelby Brice also finished second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in a personal-best 11:26.42.
Sarah Rinker and Cherylynn Schilling competed in the 1500 meter run. Rinker, who owns the season-best time for the Salukis in the event, finished seventh in a time of 4:38.41. Schilling finished 11th in a career-best 4:46.32.
The meet will resume Saturday with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events beginning at noon.
