Women's Golf Place Two on MVC Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois University women golfers Kelly Gerlach and Natalie Parker were named to the 2005 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team as announced by the league office Wednesday.
Gerlach, a sophomore from Sparta, Ill., boasts a 3.45 grade point average while majoring in political science and history. She earned all-conference honors for the second-consecutive season this spring while posting a 78.72 average through 18 rounds ranking her second on the Saluki squad and sixth in the MVC. Gerlach placed in the top ten in three tournaments in the fall, including a first-place finish at the ASU Lady Indian Classic, taking second in a play-off. Her season-best round came in the first day of the Bay Tree Classic in North Carolina where she fired a 70.
Parker, a native of Elberfeld, Ind., posted the highest grade point average of those athletes named to the team. The sophomore has a cumulative GPA of 3.87 while majoring in finance and accounting. In 18 rounds this season, she has maintained an 81.28 stroke average. Parker fired six rounds in the 70s, including her career-best 73 at the Saluki Invitational where she individually placed third with a two-round score of 152.
To be nominated as a scholar-athlete the women must maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). They must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions and must have participated in at least 50 percent of her team's rounds or played at the Missouri Valley Championship.
