Volleyball splits matches in final day of Wildcat Classic

EVANSTON, Ill. - After dropping the day's early game 3-1 to the University of Kentucky, the Salukis came back to take its third and final game of the Wildcat Classic against Brown University, 3-0.
SIU dropped three close games Friday night in a loss to host team Northwestern before taking on Kentucky and Brown Saturday.
Hitting proved to be the pitfall that the Dawgs could not get over against Kentucky. The Salukis hit .105 against the Wildcats in the match.
SIU won the first game (30-28) but could not contain UK as the team came back to take the next three (30-22, 30-23, 30-24).
Johannah Yutzy had a good game for SIU, recording 12 kills on 29 attempts with only two errors. She led the team with a .345 hitting percentage.
Holly Marita led SIU with 35 assists while freshman Kristy Elswick led the team with 13 digs. Yutzy was close behind Elswick, recording 10 digs. Yutzy also had two aces and four block assists.
SIU picked up in the sweep in the match against Brown University, winning 30-24, 30-17, 30-21.
Marissa Washington led the way for the Salukis in the 3-0. The senior tallied 15 kills on 18 attempts with only one error, recording a .778 hitting percentage. She was also doing it defensively for the Dawgs with three digs, four block assists and one block solo.
Yutzy was able to do it again offensively for the Dawgs. She had an error-free match with six kills on 14 attempts. She hit . 429 in the match.
Haley Hann also had a good game for the Salukis. She had 12 kills on 25 attempts with two errors for a .400 hitting percentage. She also had 12 digs in the match.
Marita again led the team in assists with 38. Elswick tied Hann with 12 digs in the match.
SIU returns to action Friday, Sept. 23 in a Missouri Valley Conference match against the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Salukis return home Sept. 30 against Illinois State.
