SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three UC-Riverside hitters posted double-digit kills as the Highlanders beat Southern Illinois, 3-0, in the Salukis' home opener Friday afternoon in Peterson Gym. SIU fell 30-22, 31-29, 30-20, in the third match of the day at the San Diego State Invitational.
Middle blocker Johannah Yutzy led the Salukis with 10 kills and six digs. The junior posted a career-high .467 (10 kills, three errors, 15 attempts) hitting percentage for the match.
Junior Jene' Pulliam was second on the team with nine kills and six digs, while junior Haley Hann and sophomore Katy DeWulf added eight kills apiece. Junior setter Holly Marita recorded 35 assists, six digs and two aces and freshman libero Kristy Elswick led the Saluki defense with eight digs in her first collegiate match.
The Highlanders (2-1) beat the Salukis (0-1) at the net, out-hitting SIU 57 kills to 40 with a .406 hitting percentage. UCR out-blocked the Salukis, who ranked tenth in the Valley in blocking a year ago, 8-0.
SIU faces host team San Diego State tonight at 9 p.m. CST. The Aztecs won their season opener against Liberty, 3-0 in the second game of the tournament today. Live stats are available through gametracker at www.siusalukis.com.
