WEST CHICAGO, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University men's golf team finished strong at the John Dallio Memorial, carding its lowest round of the tournament and moving up four spots to finish seventh. Andrew Gwinup was the top individual for the Salukis as he posted a 76 in the final round for a tournament-total 1-over-par 217, finishing tied for sixth.
Hosted by DePaul University, the John Dallio Memorial was a 54-hole tournament that took place at Prairie Landing Golf Club. The par-72 course played at 6,968 yards.
Saint Louis University took the team title with a 1-over-par 865. Billiken David Perritt won the individual title with a 7-under-par 209.
"We're disappointed," said Saluki head coach Leroy Newton. "We're a better team than that. We're a top three team and we can play with those teams that are up there."
SIU posted its best round as a team in the final round, an 11-stroke improvement from Monday's second round. Senior co-captain Sean McNemar came in with the low final round for the Salukis with a 3-under-par 69.
McNemar finished tied for 17th with a 5-over-par 221.
"We just did not do a good job helping each other out," said Newton. "We had Andrew's (Gwinup) 68 in the first round and Sean's (McNemar) 69 in the final round, but we couldn't put anything together with them."
Newton was impressed with the play of Gwinup as the junior from Mahomet, Ill. was tied for the lead after the first and second rounds, thanks to a first-round 68.
"I'm glad that Andrew Gwinup did so well. He was under a lot of pressure out there and played really well," said Newton.
Coming in at 44th was junior transfer Mark Schmitz with a tournament-total 77-77-76--230. Close behind was Daniel Tomlin with 78-78-76--232.
Senior Roger Welch rounded out the Saluki scorecard with 78-85-74--237.
Newton hopes to have some time this week to work with the team on their short game in preparation for next week's tournament.
"We're going to concentrate around the greens this week. We hit the ball really well this week but every time we made a mistake it cost us," said Newton. "If we continue to improve on our short game then we will get there."
SIU returns to action Oct. 3 - 4 at the Joe Agee Invitational at Two Rivers Country Club in Williamsburg, Va. The tournament is hosted by the College of William & Mary.
