ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southern Illinois middle distance runner Ty Davis, along with throwers Mark Milleville and Amarachi Ukabam, were named the Missouri Valley Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The two-time defending MVC Indoor 800-meter champion, Davis, won the 800 title at the SIU Saluki Booster Saturday. The senior from Madisonville, Ky. ran 2:13.90, the top time in the Valley this season.
Ukabam, a senior from Maryland Heights, Mo., became the second Saluki this season to automatically qualify for the 2006 NCAA Championships over the weekend. The senior threw 71-02.50 in the women's weight throw to take the meet title and qualify for the second straight season at SIU. She also took the women's shot title with a provisional qualifying mark of 52-07.25.
Her shot throw is first in the Valley this season and her weight mark is second. Both marks are ranked in the top five this season among all NCAA Division I throwers.
Milleville provisionally qualified in the weight throw over the weekend at the Saluki Booster. He threw 67-09.00 to win the meet title and post the top mark in the MVC this season. He also finished second in the shot put with a toss of 56-06, ranking third in the Valley. His shot mark is currently sixth in the nation.
This is Ukabam's sixth weekly honor, earning five last season. Milleville picks up his third award and Davis receives her first.
