TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois volleyball team kept their Missouri Valley Conference tournament hopes alive with a 3-1 victory over Indiana State Saturday night at ISU Arena.
The Salukis (10-11, 5-6) posted four hitters in double-digit kills to hit .264 and take their second victory over the Sycamores (4-18, 1-10) this season, 30-25, 30-32, 30-4, 30-26.
"Tonight we really had a well-rounded offense," Saluki head coach Brenda Winkeler said. "It was a big win for us on the road. We served well and blocked well. This win will keep us in the hunt."
Southern held Indiana State to just four points in game three, the lowest points allowed in a 30-point game in school history. The lowest point total a SIU team had allowed before that was in 2004 when the Salukis beat Wyoming 30-12 in the second game of a four-game match.
Saluki setter Holly Marita served 21 straight to put SIU on top 20-0 to start the game. The senior tied a career-best six service aces, pitching in 51 assists and 25 digs for her 29th career double-double.
Seniors Johannah Yutzy and Haley Hann posted 15 kills each. Yutzy hit .429 on the night with just three attack errors, while Hann added two solo and two block assists.
Sophomore Kristie Berwanger recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs, while freshman Chandra Roberson pitched in one of the best performances of her career with a 12 kill, three solo and two block assist effort, hitting .360 on the night.
Kristy Elswick and Kelsie Laughlin chipped in 15 digs each, Laughlin adding eight kills and Elswick two of the season-high 12 Saluki service aces. Defensive specialist Kari Buehlhorn added three service aces and four digs.
The Salukis will return home to Davies Gym to face Northern Iowa Friday, Oct. 27. SIU will then turn around Saturday to play Bradley. Both games are at 7 p.m.
