CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University return specialist Craig Turner was named this week's Gateway Conference Special Teams Player-of-the-Week, the league announced Sunday.
A native of Boutte, La., Turner piled up a career-high 233 return yards in a gem of a performance against Western Kentucky. He returned three punts for 133 yards and four kickoffs for 98 yards.
Turner scored one of two special teams touchdowns for the Salukis in the first half when he returned a punt for 83 yards to give SIU a 21-7 lead at the 10:50 mark in the second quarter. His 83-yard touchdown marked the third-longest on a punt return in school history.
Turner's 233 yards on special teams single-handedly outweighed SIU's 200 yards of total offense versus the Hilltoppers.
He is the fifth Saluki to take one of the league's weekly honors this season.
