CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University senior running back Arkee Whitlock was named this week's Gateway Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Week, the league announced Sunday.
A native of Rock Hill, S.C., Whitlock rushed for a career-high 216 yards and three touchdowns in SIU's 31-24 win over Western Illinois Saturday. Whitlock averaged 6.5 yards per carry on 33 attempts.
His two second quarter touchdowns propelled the Dawgs to a 21-10 halftime lead. Then, late in the fourth quarter after Western had tied the game, Whitlock scored the game-winning touchdown on a 10-yard scamper with 6:48 to play.
Whitlock, who ran for 200 or more yards for the second time in his career, also surpassed 3,000 yards of total offense (3,096) and 4,000 all-purpose yards (4,114) at SIU. Whitlock accounted for all but 34 of SIU's 250 rushing yards on the day.
He is the fourth Saluki to garner one of the league's weekly awards this season.
