Six named to MVC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS - The Southern Illinois University cross country teams placed six student-athletes on the 2006 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, the league announced Wednesday.
To qualify for the team, student-athletes must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average on a 4.00 scale. They must also have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions, and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
Southern Illinois had the most representatives on the teams with six total student-athletes. There were two from the men's team and four from the women's.
Kevin Doran and Mohamed Mohamed represent the men's team. Mohamed won the individual title at the MVC Championship, leading the team to a third-place finish. The sophomore from Carol Stream, Ill. had a 3.16 grade-point average while majoring in architecture.
Doran, a junior recreation major from Murphysboro, Ill., has a 3.13 grade-point average.
Representing SIU's women's team are Katie Birn, Brittani Christensen, Sarah Rinker and Lindsay Wagner.
Rinker, a 2004 and 2005 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selection, led the Salukis with a 10th-place finish at the MVC Championship. The Pontiac, Ill. native has a 3.91 grade-point average while majoring in social work.
Christensen, a 2004 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selection, finished right behind Rinker at 11th in the MVC Championship. The junior from Belvidere, Ill. boasts a 3.15 grade-point average while majoring in health education.
Coming in at 16th in the MVC Championship was Birn, also a 2004 and 2005 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selection. The senior biology major from McHenry, Ill. has a 3.15 grade-point average.
And, rounding out the team for the Salukis is Wagner, a senior majoring in elementary education. The Mt. Vernon, Ill. native has a 3.79 grade-point average and finished 17th at the MVC Championship.
The SIU cross country teams return to action Nov. 11 with the NCAA Regional Championship in Minneapolis, Minn.
