CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University senior running back Arkee Whitlock was named this week's Gateway Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Week, the league announced Sunday.
A native of Rock Hill, S.C., Whitlock became SIU's career leader in all-purpose yardage (5,200) and single-season leader in rushing touchdowns (21) against Southern Utah last week.
He rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. Averaging 7.7 yards per carry, Whitlock scored all of his touchdowns and rushed for 151 yards in the first half alone. He then watched from the sidelines for the majority of the second half.
Whitlock returned the game's opening kickoff for 47 yards to set up the Salukis' first score of the game, as well.
He has now rushed for 100 or more yards nine times in 11 games this season. Whitlock also surpassed Tom Koutsos (5,077 yards from 1999-2003) for the school's all-time career record in all-purpose yardage and Muhammad Abdulqaadir (20 TDs in 2002) for the single-season mark.
Whitlock has garnered Gateway Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors twice this year.
