Volleyball places three on MVC Scholar-Athlete Team

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Three Southern Illinois volleyball players were recognized as Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes for 2006 by a vote of the league's sports information directors. Kristie Berwanger, Kristy Elswick and Johannah Yutzy were all named honorable mention all-academic.
Creighton and Wichita State each placed three athletes on the first-team while Illinois State landed a pair on the squad.
Yutzy, receives the honor for the second-straight season. The senior middle blocker from Plain City, Ohio, carries a 3.25 grade point average in marketing. She led the team this season with 324 kills for a 3.27 per game average, hitting .293 this season, third in the league. Yutzy was second on the team with 89 blocks for a 0.90 per game average. She finishes her career with a .298 hitting percentage ranking third all-time at SIU.
Berwanger carries a 4.00 GPA in fashion design merchandising. The sophomore from Lake Zurich, Ill. was second on the team with 2.77 kills per game, adding 2.55 digs per game, third on the team. She averaged 0.51 blocks per game, leading the Salukis with eight double-doubles in her first season as a starter.
Elswick, the Saluki libero from Louisville, Ky., carries a 3.32 GPA in computer engineering. The sophomore was first on the team and in The Valley in digs per game overall (5.75) and in league play (5.97). She also led the team with 28 service aces, while carrying a .943 serve receive percentage with just 51 errors in 895 attempts. Elswick set a new school record for digs in a season with 569, sixth in The Valley all-time. She also reached the 1,000 career dig tally in just her second season, currently with 1,050 digs in her career, 305 away from the school record mark and fourth on the career list.
A total of 37 student-athletes were nominated for the 2006 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, marking the 15th-straight season that at least 30 Valley players were under consideration for league academic honors.
The criteria for the Valley's Scholar-Athlete Team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average. Also, students must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular season, reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institution and completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
